Do I need to strength train if I’m an endurance athlete?

Strength training is an important part of an endurance athlete's training program. Studies have shown that strength training can improve an athlete's performance by increasing muscle fiber recruitment, improving neuromuscular coordination, increasing fatigue resistance, and improving economy of movement.

Strength training can also help to strengthen weak areas and reduce the risk of injury. Therefore, it is important for endurance athletes to incorporate strength training into their training program. Driven Physiotherapy specializes in the holistic endurance athlete. We look at each athlete individually and design a plan specifically to meet your goals.

The best strength training for endurance athletes depends on the individual's goals and preferences. Heavy resistance training has been shown to improve the time to exhaustion at the maximal aerobic running speed in well-trained long-distance runners. High-intensity strength training exercises such as squats, deadlifts, and bench presses can be beneficial for endurance athletes, as well as exercises that target the core and upper body.

A typical plan designed by Driven Physiotherapy looks a lot like a personal training session. We assess your injuries and goals and use that information to create a treatment and performance plan based specifically on you.

If you are ready for a different approach to training or injuries, let’s schedule a call to see if we are the right fit for your needs. Click here to schedule a time to chat!
